The one thing that has kept me in this crazy world of retail for so many years, my entire career to be exact is without a doubt the customers. I love helping people, love meeting new people and I love to share my favorite products with customers. Since opening my Apothecary shop, I have met the most unbelievable people, so kind and caring, so sweet and supportive. Being an apothecary shop I really get a wide range of customers, women, men, young hipsters, elderly…seriously I would not be able to identify a target audience. I have something for everyone and every, let’s just issue ;-)
I want to share just some of the great customers experiences I have had in the short time I have been open.
White Witch – I had a gentleman enter the store and of course I asked if I could help him with anything. He kind of gave me a once over, not in a creepy way but more of a curious way. He asked the typical question “what do you sell here?” After a brief explanation by myself, he asked if I was a Wica? I gave him a funny look and sorry to say the only thing that came to my mind was he was asking if I took the Wic EBT cards. I started to say that I did not except those cards and he quickly corrected me and said “no, I was asking if you are a white witch”. Now I have been called many things in my life but this caught me off guard. He then very quickly began to tell me that I shouldn’t be offended because white witches are the good witches. HA, and my sister always said I was the bad witch! Anyway, he went on to say “well you own and apothecary shop, you are dressed completely in black (staple color for me BTW), and you are playing Stevie Nicks on the radio. Swear to you, Stevie Nicks just happen to be playing at that time, coincidence??? We both got a little laugh and I laughed even harder when he left the shop. Unfortunately or fortunately, however you look at it, I have been asked this question several times since.
Reading My Ora – A mother and daughter wandered into my shop one day, they happen to be on vacation and were exploring Vista. Right when they entered the shop we had an instant connection, they even said that I looked like someone they had met before. They were in the shop for a long time asking a ton of questions about all of the products I sold. They said they could tell I loved what I did because of the passion I had in educating them on the items. The mother asked me if she could read my aura. Of course I said yes and she started to pluck and shift imaginary floating items surrounding my body. Yes, it was a little unusual but I stood there until she was finished. She said I had a beautiful and strong aura but then asked me how my sleep was, meaning peaceful or restless. I am not sure what compelled me to share this with her but I told her that I have awful nightmares that I have had since I was small. I said I don’t tell people that because I never wanted anyone to think “wow, this chick is …” Anyway she said she asked me because she could read from my aura that I was a cleanser. She explained that some people in this world have the ability to take other people’s negative thoughts, feeling, and emotions and cleanse them. She assured me that the dreams I have been experiencing were not my dreams or thoughts. NOW, whether this is true or not, it actually made me feel a little better about my nightmares. I believe things and events happen for a reason, so I believe these two woman were meant to come into my shop and maybe take that one piece a negative or bad feeling away from me. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.
Hugs, Tears, Prayers, and More Hugs – I have had so many customers ask me if they can hug me before they leave the shop, or just come in for a hug which clearly I do not mind. I have cried with customers on many, many occasions. I don’t know why customers share what they do with me, I hope it is because I make them feel welcomed and they feel like they are in a safe environment. I even had a young girl ask if she could say a little prayer for me. This happened within a few months of me opening up shop. She knew that I was just getting started on this journey so she said she wanted to help me the only way she knew how, and that was to say a prayer for me. She closed her eyes and began to ask that I be blessed with more customers that I can handle, that I am successful and happy.
Seriously, what job can you have where your customers bring you jam or bread or cookies that they made? Where they come in for their weekly hug. Where they miss you if you are away when they visit. I have said that I wished I had started this business sooner but quite frankly, I am not sure I was mature enough. I have said this a million times “everything happens for a reason, and it’s no coincidence”! Too many things have happened since opening Apothecary Off Main to be coincidence.
Thanks for listening, until my next blog.
